The calculations that saved Apollo 13 commander James Lovell and his two crewmates after their spacecraft became damaged during the famous mission has sold at auction for $388,375.
In 1970, Lovell penciled-in the calculations on the checklist shortly after an oxygen tank exploded aboard their spacecraft, causing the crew to scrap their mission to the Moon, and focus on returning to Earth safely. Without the calculations, the crew would have been flying blind.
The blue note on the checklist reads:
This publication was utilized to transfer CSM guidance data to LM guidance system so the spacecraft data of our attitude with respect to the celestial sphere would not be lost. Note the time these calculations were made GET 58 08 06 about two hours after the explosion. James Lovell. The Lunar Module Systems Activation Checklist Book, which came directly from Lovell, was auctioned last night at Heritage Auctions in Dallas. The winning bid came in by phone, but the caller wished to remain anonymous.
